*We are currently retiring some of our adults and choosing to remain much smaller than USDA breeders. 2015 brought more rescues to us than all of our years before total, and this year is shaping up to be no different. Because of the more abundant mass-breeding operations that do little to no education or screening, Utah is facing a potential over-population problem. We breed because we love hedgehogs and want to better the species, but we cannot in good conscience continue to produce at the same rate we have in previous years. We are offering these amazing individuals at very low adoption fees. If you are interested in providing one of them with a forever home, please fill out our questionnaire form and check out the photos and descriptions of available adults here. We will continue to breed at a smaller size, to preserve our quality lines and to continue our work increasing longevity, but we will be focusing more on rescue and community education from this point out. Thank you for your continued support of both our rescue program and our breeding program!*
Why buy from Storybook?
With other options on the market, what is it about Storybook that sets us apart from the rest?
First and foremost, our meticulous selection of the healthiest, most diverse bloodlines. Because we do not just view our hedgies as a “product” that we rush to pump out, but rather, as a living thing to which we make a commitment, we have invested thousands of dollars and countless research, driving, and labor hours in obtaining the highest quality lines available. We have worked toward perfecting our own uncommon lines. In order to increase longevity, decrease health problems, and better the species in general, every breeder should be tracking pedigrees to prevent inbreeding and identify positive and negative traits attached to certain lines, as well as making extensive notes with every generation and every animal, but few breeders do this. Even among breeders with pedigreed animals, WHS producing lines like BBH Mickey or PPH Insanity are still used. We want to guarantee, for our animals’ sakes, that the baby that goes home with you will live the longest, healthiest life possible, so not only do we refuse to include those lines in our herd, but we painstakingly plan out each pairing, each new addition, and which animals we keep back. We have put in the years of work and research, and made the investment, to bring in only the best tempered and best lined hedgehogs country-wide. We believe that the longest-lasting buildings are built on the strongest foundations, so we have taken our time to establish the best foundation around!
We also have been around longer than any other breeder of pedigreed hedgehogs in the state. Before we began breeding, there were no pedigreed hedgehogs in Utah. We have served countless happy owners over the years, and have even had return customers– we work as hard as possible to ensure we continue building that positive reputation! Having experience as a vet tech, a zoo aide, and an exotics handler, we have built up an extensive and unique education. We even have employees from the local pet stores and vets calling us when questions come up regarding hedgehogs! We have had the time and experience to build up a knowledgeable support team for you and your hedgie that is available day and night, whether through emails, Facebook, or even phone calls and texts– as we call it, 24/7 “tech support”.
In addition, we offer the highest level of care for our hedgehogs in all aspects. They are our pets first and foremost, and we dote on them accordingly. Our hedgehogs are each socialized and snuggled daily, have access to custom-made running wheels, snuggle bags, and a custom-blend of 7 of the best foods on the market. We keep our non-nursing hedgehogs on fleece, not shavings or pellets, to keep them as clean, comfortable, and healthy as possible (we don’t mind the extra laundry if it means satisfied hedgies). Our girls are only bred every six months (or longer if we feel she would benefit from an extended rest time), and retired at 2 years old (or earlier if we feel she is not happy with motherhood). We address each hedgehog's individual needs, because to us, it’s not just about convenience, it’s about our love for our pets.
